Our Ti Atis at P.S. 189, Bilingual Center are at it again! Joining us for another 10-week arts residency is Richard Louissaint, photojournalist. Born in Montreal, Quebec to two loving Haitian parents, the Louissaint family migrated to New York City when Richard was very young. Growing up in Queens, he was exposed to a wide spectrum of the Caribbean diaspora while being very influenced by the African-American experience.
Before becoming a photographer, Richard was music journalist for Vibe Magazine, The Source, and other publications. His editorial work and portraiture have been published in Wax Poetic Magazine, MTV and the New York Times, and has been exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum, The International Center of Photography’s Rita K. Hillman Education Gallery, and Brooklyn Borough Hall. He has also enthusiastically expanded into video work, shooting music videos, mini-documentaries and profiles.
This is Richard’s second time teaching photography at P.S. 189. Back in 2013, he ran a Photography Narrative Workshop, offering 13 students an opportunity to experience working with the unfamiliar medium of photography. Students were asked to view books by photographers around the world, encouraged to share their ideas about the aesthetics of the photographs, and come to a consensus on the meaning of each image.
This year, Richard is teaching students how to use photography to tell stories about their life and surroundings while understanding the elements of a photo. They will learn that there is more to photography than pretty images and why it is important for them to be able to tell their own stories. Students will learn and understand the basics of photography, take photos that demonstrate their understanding of what a photo can communicate, and analyze the qualities of a given photo. At the end of the 10-weeks, students will select their favorite photos to be printed for a group show.
