At Haiti Cultural Exchange, during our endeavors to promote the cultural expressions of the Haitian people, we also find it necessary to remain politically aware and engaged. Through our multidisciplinary programming we hope to lead educational discussions and appreciation and celebration of Haitian culture.
Our programs’ primary goals are to to spark interest in Haiti, connect youth to their heritage, and serve as a catalyst for the emergence of new ideas.
Here are some of our past participants reactions to the change HCX is bringing to our community!
"I like that we could express our feelings. It's good and fun! It's good with kids with anger problems. Yeah, now I don't fight." -Dillon Gibbs, HCX Ti Atis Student, March 2011
“I really believe in what HCX is providing for the community. It is making real change by creating a place for people, not just Haitians, to experience the arts.” -Shakespeare Guirand, HCX teaching artist, on “Art as Therapy” Radio Show, One Caribbean Radio 97.9 FM HD2, March, 2011
“In DAWP, they were challenged to show up for themselves, speak up, claim themselves as writers and tellers of their own truths. The onus of Haitian artists is to pass on this tradition of telling our stories to the next generation.” -Ibi Zoboi, Daughters of Anacaona Writing Project Director, October 2010
"There is something very powerful about hte change that HCX is making within the Haitian community and within the Haiti-interest community in New York at large." -Kassandra Khalil, Development Intern, HCX
