Descriptions: 1) “From Haiti to Brooklyn: Youth, Arts, Change” workshop series held during the month of May at P.S. 189 was extremely successful. In collaboration with Brooklyn for Barack, we were able to serve over 300 youth and the culminating ceremony drew many parents, friends, and other community members.
The administration at P.S. 189 was very pleased with the outcome of the program and realized how much their students benefited from participating in arts activities. In the Fall 2010, we will launch a new after-school arts based program at P.S. 189. The program will be offered in four 7-week sessions throughout the school year on Fridays from 2:30pm – 4:30pm. The student body will range in age from 5-8 (Kindergarten to Third grade). Each individual classroom will contain no more than 20 students.
We are seeking artists that can commit to teaching a 7-week session and have experience working with children ages 5 to 8. We will provide arts materials, snacks and a stipend.
The HCX after school program may offer the following course options to the students: Haitian Folktale writing, Haitian Drumming, Haitian Folkloric Dance, Krik:Krak! Folktales and Songs, Haitian Mask-Making, Photography, Creative Writing, Puppet Theater, Haitian Craft making. We are of course open to other options depending on your expertise!
2) We are curating an outdoor festival in Manhattan on Saturday, October 16th.
We are looking for teaching artists to conduct arts-based workshops for children ages 3 to 14. We will have two shifts — 12 to 3pm and 3 to 6pm, and the arts activity will recur two to three times during the shift. We will provide arts materials and a stipend.
3) Our signature Krik:Krak! Storytelling and Songs program will begin again on Saturdays in September.
Three times per year we will hold 8-weeks of sessions from 11 to Noon for children ages 3 to 6. Folktales are read in English and Kreyòl and songs are sung in Kreyòl. We will provide materials and a stipend. Kreyòl speakers required.
If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please indicate your choice (s), send a resume/bio, clips of your work (if available), and a course description and outline (no outline necessary for Krik:Krak!). These can be emailed to regine@hcx.qadracreatives.com. To be considered for these opportunities, please send us your information by Monday, August 16, 2010.
Many of our students have arrived recently from Haiti, therefore we prefer that teaching artists speak Haitian Creole. Please specify in your reply whether or not you speak Haitian Creole. Mési anpil!
We look forward to continuing to work with you to provide arts opportunities for our youth! Feel free to forward these opportunities to your networks.
Sincerely, Régine M. Roumain
